Director of Practice Operations
Mary Michalek
Mary Michalek gives the term "working mother" a whole new meaning. An RN in the hospital, clinic and school. Nights at Caterpiller in occupational medicine. Earning an MBA at St Ambrose. Studying law at the University of Iowa. All the while raising two terrific sons... and staying happily married for over 40 years!
"It's very exciting to be part of the OSF family," says Mary. "It's a really good fit, an opportunity to be part of an organization that is quality driven. The Sisters' Mission of providing ‘the greatest care and love' definitely aligns with the Clinic."
Mary earned her diploma from St. Anthony in the Quad Cities and pursued a career in nursing for several years. She went on to study business at St. Ambrose University and, as the only health care professional, enjoyed learning from people in different kinds of businesses.
At John Deere, she managed government contracts for an HMO and studied contracts and insurance at the University of Iowa. Before heading to Galesburg Clinic, Mary was the chief operating officer at Trinity Hospital for five years.
"For the last year or so, our goal has been to gradually integrate the Clinic with OSF policies and procedures. The biggest project is the new physician enterprise group, which will empower the physicians to manage themselves. It's also been exciting to implement electronic medical records. The benefits to the patients and the Clinic are amazing."
Mary and her husband, Dan, a John Deere retiree, have been married for over 40 years. Their son, Steve, is a medical defense attorney while their other son, Kevin, is the general manager of American Furniture.
Describing herself as an "outdoorsy person," Mary loves visiting Colorado and being able to take the train from Galesburg! At home, she's an active member of the community, serving on many local boards and committees, from the Symphony to Carl Sandburg College.
